Generally, the resident’s day starts around 5:30 or 6:00 in the morning. This is the time when the CNAs, or certified nursing assistants, begin getting the residents out of bed. Many residents will need assistance ambulating, and getting in and out of bed, and many more will need help with getting dressed.
Once this process is finished, CNAs begin to ready the residents for breakfast. Breakfast is usually served around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning. Breakfast usually lasts about an hour and a half, depending on the number of residents. Many residents will need assistance with eating, and the CNAs will provide them with extra assistance. Trays will be passed out, picked up, and cleaned.
After breakfast, the residents who are designated for showers will begin the process of showering, dressing, and grooming, which includes hair combing and other hygienic activities. Then, there’s typically going to be some type of mid-morning activity. Nursing home staff will try to incorporate something active, like for example, having the residents who are able pass around a balloon, or walks outside. Or, the activity may be stimulating in other ways, like listening to music or stories.
Lunch typically starts around 12 o’clock. Again, the residents needing assistance eating will get the help needed, similarly to breakfast. Once lunch ends there’s generally going to be a mid-day activity. Again, it will be something stimulating, either physically or mentally.
During this time, the residents scheduled for physical therapy or medical visits will receive that treatment. Showers will continue for those residents so designated. Not all residents are showered every day.
Dinner starts at around 5:00p.m. Similarly to breakfast and lunch, this can be a time consuming process. After dinner, residents will then prepared for bedtime, which usually occurs before 8 p.m.
