Elderly citizens who suffer from conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease often require the kind of care that can only be given at a nursing home. While most nursing homes employ good people, there are times when even good people act in the wrong way. As the Tampa Bay Times reports, one nursing home employee is facing charges for having assaulted a patient.
The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of a 36-year-old nursing home employee.
The arrest is linked to an incident that occurred Thursday at Grand Villa of New Port Richey nursing home. Police responded to a call in which the Deputy Director of the nursing home reported that resident assistant Tomika Carter allegedly struck a resident, who is 77 several times. Carter then allegedly pushed the resident down.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage that showed Carter striking the resident several times and then pushing the resident to the ground.
When interviewed, Carter said that she was aware of the patients age and his conditions. She also admitted that she might have gone too far.
Carter was placed under arrest. She was being held in the Pasco County jail in lieu of $5000 bail. She is facing charges of abusing an elderly person.
