California Man Arrested for Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is becoming too common an occurrence in today’s society.  Elder abuse can take many forms, from verbal abuse to physical or sexual abuse, and can include financial abuse or neglect.  Sadly, many instances of elder abuse are perpetrated by the victim’s own family members.

An Oroville, California man is facing charges of physically and verbally abusing his elderly mother.

Bruce Richard Burton was arrested and is facing charges of elder abuse, damaging or destroying a phone line, and dissuading a victim from reporting a crime.

Police arrived at the residence on Thursday, May 23, where the victim told them that Burton had been verbally and physically abusive towards her.

According to authorities, the victim got into a verbal confrontation with Burton on May 16.  When she attempted to call 911, Burton took the phone from her, throwing it and damaging it.  The victim them attempted to use the emergency button on her medical alert communications device.  The device was mounted in the kitchen and Burton allegedly ripped the device from the wall.

Burton returned to the home on May 22 and the victim feared for her life.

Barton was located by law enforcement officials at about 10 a.m. on May 27.  He was found near fifth street in Oroville.  His vehicle had broken down in the neighborhood.  Police took Burton into custoday.

His bond was set at $165,000.
